This was beautifully put; truly an amazing case study. I thought I was the only one who made a correlation between this film and "A Woman Under the Influence" - two masterworks on alienation perceived by others as madness.

I felt like there were a lot more parallels to explore here: the nervy, detailed lead performances by Vitti and Rowlands, Giuliana's and Mabel's experiences of motherhood, the films' endings where 'normality' is restored but nothing is resolved... But I never quite found the time to go beyond this brief reference.
